Research Interest:
I am interested in dosimetric analysis of treatment plan of radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery for intracranial and head and neck neoplasms and molecular genetics of head and neck cancers and colorectal cancers.
(A) Dosimetric analysis of treatment plan of radiation therapy
The advent of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and other novel radiation therapy techniques allow dose escalation to the tumours while keeping the dose to surrounding critical structures to a minimum. However the narrow therapeutic window for certain malignancies like head and neck cancers poses a great challenge in offering a radical tumoricidal dose while reducing the risk of complications of xerostomia, mucositis and dysphagia.
The success of accurate and reliable delivery of IMRT heavily relies on the precise contouring, optimization and quality assurance. We are currently investigating the accuracy of contouring by co-registered PET/CT scan with MRI, in collaboration with the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, the University of Hong Kong. We are also performing research on the role of dosimetric parameters which predict the complications after IMRT, so that we can adopt better techniques during optimization procedures during treatment planning.
(B) Stereotactic radiosurgery for intracranial and head and neck malignancies
We are currently carrying out research in dosimetric analysis of the conformity and heterogeneity of radiation therapy in stereotactic radiosurgery. The research outcome will enable us to devise a more conformal technique in the delivery of radiosurgery.
(C) Molecular genetics of head and neck cancers and colorectal cancers
Ongoing molecular research projects are currently underway on the role of genetic aberrations in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and colorectal cancers. We are looking forward to identifying genetic markers which allow us to predict who would benefit from more intensive treatments for nasopharyngeal carcinoma and colorectal cancers.
